The Cincinnati Bengals faced off against the defending Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, in their preseason opener at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday night. Despite a few hiccups, the Bengals showed promising signs of improvement.
Pro Bowl quarterback Joe Burrow and All-Pro wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase delivered strong performances, with Chase making several impressive plays, including a 36-yard touchdown pass. Brown felt that Chase was “set” as an individual standard, both on air and in practice.
The run game also seemed to be clicking, with Chase averaging 4.6 yards per carry and delivering a stiff-arm to linebacker Smael Mondon. Burrow praised the efficiency of the offense when they were able to run the ball, saying “Great things are going to happen.”
Defensive tackle T.J. Slaton Jr. spoke highly of first-round draft pick Shemar Stewart’s work up and down the defensive line, noting his strength and awareness but acknowledging that he needs to get details right. The team struggled with communication on defense, but Slaton believes they’re already at a good place in terms of knowing their assignments.
The Bengals’ special teams unit had a rough night, however, with several procedural penalties costing them yards. Burrow emphasized the importance of cleanliness across the board and vowed to “learn from mistakes.”
Overall, the Bengals showed promise in their preseason opener, but still have work to do before the season begins.
