Mafia 2nd Best Review in Series, Still Trails Steam Numbers

Mafia: The Old Country has launched with the second-best Metacritic score in the series, but its player count on Steam lags behind previous entries. Despite this, the game has received a “Very Positive” rating and is considered a great start for the series.

Game developer Hangar 13 made headlines when they revealed that Mafia: The Old Country would be $50 at launch, as they focused on creating a narrative-driven experience. This approach paid off, with the game receiving high reviews from critics, scoring second-best in the series on Metacritic behind Mafia: Definitive Edition.

However, the game’s Steam player count is lower compared to other entries in the series. According to SteamDB, Mafia: The Old Country peaked at 27,585 players shortly after its release and currently has around 19,000 online. While this number is impressive, it falls short of previous records set by Mafia 2 (2010), Definitive Edition (2020), and Mafia 3 (2016).

Mafia: The Old Country still manages to impress with its launch numbers, beating out the original Mafia (2022) and a remake of Mafia 2’s Definitive Edition (2020). This success proves that the series still has a loyal fanbase.
