Google Calendar’s Material You Update Brings Visual Changes

Google has rolled out a visual update to its Material You Expressive design language, bringing changes to its calendar layout. The biggest change can be seen in the Month view, where each date is now wrapped in a rounded rectangle, giving it a card-like appearance.

However, some users have noticed an unexpected side effect: phantom gray dots at the intersections of the boxes. This illusion is caused by the Hermann grid pattern used in Material You and is not overwhelming but once seen, it’s difficult to ignore.

The Week and Schedule views also receive the Dynamic Color treatment, with solid background blocks replacing the faint gridlines. While this update aims to improve readability, some users may find the app feels heavier visually.

Event creation, settings, and event detail views remain unchanged. The update focuses on surface-level consistency with Google’s Material You Expressive rollout across Android 16 and its other apps like Keep. It is a server-side rollout, meaning it will be applied to devices in the future, pending A/B testing.
