Amtrak is set to launch its new high-speed “NextGen” Acela trains on August 28, serving Boston, New York, Washington D.C., and other major cities in the Northeast Corridor.
The first five NextGen trains will enter service initially, with a total of 28 new trains expected to be operational by 2027. The upgraded fleet boasts top speeds of 160 mph, 10 mph faster than the current Acela fleet, thanks to its tilt system.
Passengers can enjoy features like plug-in charging, free high-speed Wi-Fi, reading lights, and larger bathrooms. This new design aims to provide a smoother, gentler, more comfortable ride.
The upgrade will not only increase seat capacity by 27% but also enhance weekday and weekend service. A recent watchdog report highlights the years of delays, which were largely caused by vendor designs failing to meet federal safety requirements.
Despite the setbacks, Amtrak is confident in its new fleet’s capabilities and looks forward to providing improved travel experiences for its customers.
