Boos Echo as Yankees’ Devin Williams Struggles in Loss to Astros

New York Yankees reliever Devin Williams faced a loud chorus of boos after walking off the mound with three runs surrendered in the top of the 10th inning, including a two-run homer, in a 5-3 loss to the Houston Astros.

Williams’ struggles continued despite having 17 saves on the year. Since the All-Star break, he has been inconsistent and blamed his performance on not making pitches. “I stink right now,” he said bluntly after the game.

Williams has given up at least one run in five straight outings since the break. His recent struggles have raised concerns among fans and coaches about his ability to close games. Yankees manager Aaron Boone had faith in Williams, calling him upon despite other available options.

“We’ll try and find good spots for [Williams] to get him back to being a big part of the pen,” Boone said. Despite his struggles, Williams has shown potential in the past, allowing just 26 earned runs over 141 innings with the Milwaukee Brewers from 2022-24.
