New COVID Variant ‘Stratus’ Spreads Globally: Symptoms Remain Unchanged

A new COVID-19 variant known as “Stratus” is spreading rapidly across the US and worldwide. Detected in Southeast Asia in January, Stratus became a significant concern in May, accounting for up to 14% of cases in the US by June.

According to experts, Stratus is a combination of variants F.7 and LP.8.1.2, which may enhance its ability to evade immune responses but does not seem to be highly contagious. The World Health Organization has added Stratus to its watchlist, citing “low” global public health risk.

The symptoms of Stratus remain similar to those experienced with other COVID-19 variants, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. However, hoarseness has been reported by some individuals infected with the strain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise seeking medical care if symptoms worsen or include trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, or inability to wake up. The CDC also emphasizes that currently approved vaccines remain effective against Stratus, especially for symptomatic and severe disease.
