A California-based owner of two Windows 10 laptops is suing Microsoft over its decision to end support for the operating system in October, claiming that many users will be left vulnerable to cyberattacks and data breaches.
The lawsuit alleges that Microsoft’s move will leave around 700 million users with outdated PCs, which are now at risk of attack. The plaintiff argues that Microsoft should continue providing free support for Windows 10 until less than 10% of the user base is using the operating system, thereby allowing more than 600 million PCs to upgrade to Windows 11.
The lawsuit suggests that Microsoft’s real intention in ending Windows 10 support is to force customers to purchase new devices running on its latest software, such as Copilot. This could lead to a decrease in trade for competitors’ generative AI products and limit innovation and consumer choice.
As the deadline approaches, users who plan to continue using Windows 10 without upgrading should act quickly to extend support before October 14. Microsoft has offered varying support extensions, including free support with certain parameters, but critics argue that this approach is inadequate.
