China has raised concerns over the security of Nvidia’s H20 artificial intelligence chips, citing potential backdoor access that could allow remote control or shutdown. A Chinese social media account affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV claimed that the chips are not environmentally friendly and technologically advanced enough for consumers to feel safe purchasing them.
Nvidia developed the H20 chips specifically for the Chinese market after US export restrictions on advanced AI chips were lifted in July 2023. The US had previously banned their sales due to escalating trade tensions with China, but reversed the ban in a move that allowed Nvidia to continue selling its products in the country.
China’s cyberspace watchdog summoned Nvidia to a meeting last month, asking the company to explain whether its H20 chips pose any security risks. Nvidia denied having “backdoors” that would allow remote access or control over its products.
The concerns come as Chinese state media outlets have been criticizing Nvidia for not providing enough assurances on the security of its chips. People’s Daily recently called on the company to produce “convincing security proofs” to regain market trust and alleviate users’ worries about potential security risks.
