US Duo Help Juventus Knock Out Manchester City

US internationals Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah played a crucial role in Juventus’ 2-0 win over Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, making history by becoming the first Americans to connect for a goal and assist. The duo’s performance ended a string of four straight draws for Juventus, moving them closer to reaching the knockout phase of this season’s revamped Champions League.

Weah played a perfect cross that led to McKennie scoring an exquisite side volley past Éderson, while McKennie assisted Weah in the second half. The result kept Juventus in 14th place in the table and boosted their confidence ahead of the knockout phase.

McKennie and Weah have been part of the US senior team since 2018 and have played a combined 73 games together for club and country. Despite facing challenges as Americans playing in top European teams, McKennie credited his unique qualities to his success on the field, saying “I like when people doubt me, and sometimes I play my best football when people doubt me.”

Juventus coach Thiago Motta praised McKennie’s physicality, technique, and ability to make a difference on the field. The win also marked Juventus’ third consecutive victory over Manchester City and ended their record of six straight unbeaten games against Italian teams.
