Israel has consistently denied the existence of starvation in Gaza, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. The country’s “hasbara” operation – a euphemism for erasing the truth – relies on disinformation and propaganda to obscure the reality of famine in the besieged territory.
For over 21 months, international media largely avoided reporting on the crisis, instead focusing on Ukraine. However, as images of starving Palestinian children began to emerge, Western audiences were forced to confront the harsh realities of the siege. The Israeli government’s response was swift: a new wave of propaganda aimed at discrediting the evidence.
Israel claims that the starvation is not caused by its blockade but rather by individual cases of Palestinian civilians suffering from pre-existing medical conditions. However, this explanation falls short when considering the broader context of famine and medicide. The siege has deliberately denied access to basic necessities like food, fuel, and medicine, resulting in a humanitarian crisis.
The international community’s response has been muted, with many newsrooms avoiding the word “starvation” to minimize outrage. This reluctance is an unwelcome accomplice to Israel’s strategy of controlling the narrative and paralyzing opposition. The real issue is not the individual cases of Palestinian civilians suffering from medical conditions but the systemic denial of basic human rights.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, it is essential to acknowledge the reality of starvation in Gaza and hold those responsible accountable. History will record this as a grave failure of journalism and international awareness.
