Iran Blocks US-Brokered Caucasus Peace Deal Amid Foreign Intervention Fears

A newly signed US-brokered peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been welcomed by many international institutions, but not without opposition from Iran. The agreement aims to end decades of conflict over the disputed region of Karabakh. However, Iran claims it will block a planned corridor along its border due to concerns over foreign intervention.

The EU, UN, Russia, and Georgia’s opposition have praised the deal as beneficial for achieving lasting peace in the Caucasus region. Armenian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze described it as a new era of stability and economic development.

The agreement was signed by Armenia and Azerbaijan leaders, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev, respectively, with US President Donald Trump present in Washington. The deal follows almost four decades of conflict over Karabakh, which Azerbaijan regained control over in September 2023 after a military campaign.
