Film Director and Producer Pay Tribute to Apollo 13 Commander
Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer have paid tribute to the late Jim Lovell, commander of the ill-fated moon mission that inspired their hit 1995 movie Apollo 13. Lovell passed away on Thursday at the age of 97.
The astronaut’s courage, intellect, and leadership during the mission were hailed as an inspiration to a nation. “Jim Lovell was a true American hero whose courage, intellect and grace under pressure inspired a nation,” said Grazer in a statement.
Howard also paid tribute, saying “Rest in peace, Commander Lovell. Your combination of intellect, courage and commitment to duty made you one of the most remarkable individuals I’ve ever met.” The Apollo 13 film was an international success, earning $355 million worldwide and starring Tom Hanks as Lovell alongside Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton.
Lovell’s son-in-law, Ed Harris, also shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, saying “There are people who dare, who dream and who lead others to the places we would not go on our own. Jim Lovell was that kind of guy.” He added, “God speed you, on this next voyage, Jim Lovell.”
The Apollo 13 mission failed due to an oxygen tank explosion two days into the flight, but NASA scientists managed to use the moon’s gravity as a slingshot to send the spacecraft back to Earth. The film’s success was a testament to Lovell’s bravery and leadership during the mission.
