Europe Burns as Heat Wave Grips Continent

A severe heat wave has gripped parts of Europe, with temperatures soaring up to 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 Fahrenheit) in southern France and increasing the risk of wildfires. Scientists say Europe is becoming the world’s fastest-warming continent, with 2025 predicted to be the second- or third-warmest year on record.

The heat wave has already led to major outbreaks of fires in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Bulgaria, with most being brought under control but others still burning out of control. In France, a massive blaze in the Aude department has scorched 16,000 hectares, despite firefighters remaining on the scene for weeks.

The EU’s Copernicus climate service reports that Europe’s land temperatures have risen about 2.3C above pre-industrial levels, nearly twice the global rate, intensifying heat waves. The U.K.’s Met Office expects a heat wave to peak around 33C (90F) in London on Tuesday, with the UK Health Security Agency issuing a yellow health alert for older adults and those with medical conditions.

In Hungary, temperatures broke records over the weekend, reaching 39.9C (104F) on Sunday, while Bulgaria has also issued maximum fire danger alerts due to the extreme heat. The situation remains “very challenging” in both countries, with firefighters battling flames in rugged terrain.

The heat wave is not just a natural disaster, but also a symptom of climate change. As Europe becomes the world’s fastest-warming continent, it highlights the need for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of global warming.
