AOL is discontinuing its dial-up internet service after 34 years, citing a shift to broadband connections as the reason for the shutdown. The service will be replaced by more modern internet options. This change does not affect AOL’s other products and services, including email accounts.
Dial-up internet was once a common way to access the internet from home, but with the rise of broadband connections, it has become less popular. Despite this, a small number of customers are still using the legacy connection. The discontinuation will be made on September 30.
AOL’s history dates back to the 1990s when it was the leading internet service provider in the US. It dominated households at that time and is known for its iconic “You’ve got mail” greeting and instant messaging services.
