Ex-BioWare Producers Warns of “Messy” Development Cycles and Remastering Opportunities for Mass Effect 5

Former Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah has shared his insights on life at BioWare, including the development cycle of upcoming games like Mass Effect 5. He suggested that the next Mass Effect game’s developers should “scapegoat” Dragon Age: The Veilguard to steer clear of problematic development practices.

Darrah expressed frustration with EA’s stance on remasters, stating it’s “strange for a publicly traded company to be against free money.” However, he also believes that the challenges in remastering Dragon Age games make them less appealing compared to Mass Effect. The difference in engine technology and the need to hire external studios to complete work makes remasters more feasible and cost-effective for Mass Effect.

Darrah proposed remastering the first three Dragon Age games (Origins, 2, and Inquisition) as a “Champions Trilogy,” which was discussed with EA but didn’t materialize. He suggests that the next step for the Dragon Age series should focus on remasters to capitalize on the success of Mass Effect’s remastered editions, such as the Legendary Edition.
