A mysterious viral infection is causing unusual growths to appear on the heads of rabbits in Fort Collins, Colorado. The affected animals have black, tentacle-like protrusions or quills coming from their mouths and faces. According to wildlife officials, the condition is caused by a virus that results in wart-like growths similar to benign cancerous cells.
The virus is not contagious to humans, dogs, or other wildlife, and does not harm the rabbit unless it grows on sensitive areas such as the eyes or mouth. Wildlife officials are urging people to give infected rabbits space and avoid attempts to help or handle them.
The condition is not considered a threat to public health, but residents are advised to be cautious when approaching the affected animals. Residents have reported seeing these unusual-looking rabbits in southeast Fort Collins, with one person describing it as having “black quills” around its mouth. The growths appear to be temporary and do not last beyond the winter season.
While there is no known cure for the virus, wildlife officials are working to monitor the situation and provide guidance on how to safely coexist with infected rabbits.
