For 44 years, Philipos Melaku-Bello has stood watch outside the White House, a steadfast advocate for nuclear disarmament and an end to global conflicts. As the longest-serving steward of the White House Peace Vigil, he spends over 100 hours each week keeping the protest alive.
The vigil, which began in 1981, has survived seven presidents, countless global conflicts, and numerous attempts to dismantle it. However, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) recently wrote a letter to the Interior Department calling for the agency to review the legality of the demonstration, accusing protesters of “hijacking” a national park.
Melaku-Bello faces intense scrutiny from hostile interactions, including physical attacks, spitting, and vandalism. Despite this, he claims the vigil’s following has only grown, with supporters worldwide praising his efforts. International press frequently interviews him, and social media platforms facilitate communication with followers and donors.
The Peace Vigil has become a symbol of peaceful protest in the face of adversity. Melaku-Bello’s dedication to the cause has earned him international recognition, including support from Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), who has championed the activists’ efforts in Congress.
As temperatures rise in Washington D.C., Melaku-Bello remains resolute, ready to stand watch through the day and night, a testament to his unwavering commitment to peace and justice.
