BioWare’s proposal for a trilogy remaster of the first three Dragon Age games, pitched to EA, has been met with resistance. According to series veteran Mark Darrah, the publisher is “against free money” and seems to be unwilling to invest in a remastered trilogy.
Darrah, who worked on the first three Dragon Age games as executive producer, believes that EA wants mainstream success and sees Dragon Age as a challenging franchise to adapt for a broader audience. In contrast, Mass Effect received a successful trilogy remaster, known as the Legendary Edition.
The problem lies in the fact that BioWare is currently working with limited resources between the Mass Effect and Dragon Age teams, making it difficult to allocate more resources to a remastered trilogy. Darrah suggests that the studio would be better off focusing on one project at a time to avoid “open warfare over resources.”
This decision aligns with comments from series creator David Gaider, who mentioned staff conflicts between the two franchises’ development teams. However, it raises concerns about the future of the Dragon Age series, particularly after the underwhelming reception to Veilguard.
Darrah believes that there is still potential for more games in the franchise, but it’s unclear how the series can regain momentum at this point. The failure of Veilguard to live up to expectations has already been acknowledged by John Epler, who stated that the game will not match the success of Dragon Age 4 in fans’ minds.
