SC Orders Removal of Delhi’s 10 Lakh Stray Dogs Within 8 Weeks

The Supreme Court has directed the removal of all stray dogs in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) within eight weeks, citing concerns over public safety. However, animal welfare groups like PETA India have termed the order as “impractical, illogical, and illegal”.

PETA India’s senior director of veterinary affairs, Dr Mini Aravindan, argues that forced removal will create chaos and suffering for both humans and animals. She suggests that the government should boost sterilisation and vaccination programs instead.

The group’s advocacy associate, Shaurya Agrawal, also criticized the order, stating that it is “inhumane” and “cruel”. He claims that housing 10 lakh dogs in shelters is impractical and will create problems.

Several animal rights activists have condemned the top court’s order, calling it “impractical”, “financially unviable”, and “potentially harmful” to the region’s ecological balance. They argue that long-term strategies like scaling up Animal Birth Control programs are more effective solutions.

The Supreme Court rejected all intervention applications, stating that its action is motivated by urgent safety concerns rather than public sentiment. The court emphasized that it will not entertain any pleas in the larger interest of the public.
