A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the north-east province of Balikesir in Turkey on Sunday evening, killing one person and injuring 29 others. The quake’s epicentre was in the town of Sindirgi, where 16 buildings collapsed. Eighty-one-year-old woman passed away after being pulled from rubble. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement wishing recovery to those affected. Search and rescue operations have concluded with no further serious damage or casualties reported. The area is prone to seismic activity due to its location at the intersection of three major tectonic plates.
