Woman Urged to Get Rabies Shot After Finding Dead Bat in Toilet

A woman, Alison Doyle (@tismpump), recently found a dead bat in her toilet and was advised on social media to visit the hospital for potential rabies exposure. Despite being autistic and having chronic illnesses, she took the advice seriously and sought medical attention.

Alison, who shares her life experiences with autism, ADHD, and mental health, initially posted a video of her reaction to finding the bat. Many users commented that she should get a rabies vaccine, given the risk of exposure to the virus. The NHS explains that rabies is a rare but serious infection usually caught from an infected animal’s bite or scratch.

In response to concerns about her mental health and accessibility, Alison told hospital staff that if they believed she didn’t need the vaccine, she was okay with leaving. The hospital acknowledged her concerns and offered support.

Alison has since received praise on social media for being proactive about her health. Experts note that rabies is rare in the UK but can be found in some bats. The virus is spread by mammals including dogs, raccoons, foxes, and bats, and can be contracted through bites or scratches, as well as licks to the eyes, nose, or mouth.
