A tourist from New York, Kevin Mares, 25, was fatally shot early Sunday at a popular seaside shantytown called La Perla in Puerto Rico. Mares was attending one of Bad Bunny’s concerts and was with three friends who were also from New York.
According to police, the shooting occurred when several people near Mares began arguing and one pulled out a gun, shooting him multiple times. Two other people, including a brother and sister in their mid-40s, were injured and remain hospitalized.
Mares was shot in the abdomen and died at Puerto Rico’s largest public hospital. The police do not know what sparked the argument or have a description of the shooter.
The incident occurred in an area with a dark reputation, where violence persists despite efforts to improve safety. Last year, two tourists were stabbed, and this year, another tourist was killed after being attacked while taking pictures of the area.
Puerto Rico has reported 277 killings so far this year, compared to 325 at the same period last year.
