Israel Intensifies Bombing of Gaza, Killing at Least 89 Palestinians

Israel has stepped up its bombing campaign in Gaza, killing at least 89 Palestinians in the past 24 hours, including 15 people waiting for food distribution. The strikes have intensified since Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet approved plans to expand the war in the territory.

The Gaza Civil Defence Agency reported that Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City had increased over the past three days. Five more people, including two children, died of starvation, as international leaders condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The foreign ministers of 24 countries, including the UK and Japan, called for immediate aid shipments to be allowed into Gaza. “Urgent action is needed now to halt and reverse starvation,” they said.

Netanyahu has proposed that Palestinians leave Gaza, but this plan has been condemned as illegal and ethnic cleansing. The Israeli military claimed it was looking into reports of civilian casualties, but denied that its forces were moving deeper into Gaza City.

The crisis in Gaza has resulted in 61,599 Palestinian deaths and 154,088 injuries since October 7, 2023, according to the Gaza health ministry. An outpouring of condemnation followed the death of five journalists in an Israeli airstrike on Sunday, with the UN Secretary-General calling for an independent investigation.

The international community has urged Israel to allow aid shipments into Gaza and to investigate reports of civilian casualties. The situation remains dire, with widespread famine and hunger-related deaths reported.
