Meta’s popular social media platforms experienced issues on Wednesday afternoon, with thousands of users reporting outages across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The problems started to resolve around 5:30 p.m. EST, but not before causing widespread disruptions.
According to reports, over 100,000 Facebook users were affected, followed by tens of thousands of Instagram users. A similar spike in issues was reported on WhatsApp and Threads.
The issue was largely resolved within hours, with Meta apologizing to those affected and stating that the problem had been fixed at 99%. The company’s status page indicated that several tools and platforms experienced “major disruptions” during the outage.
This latest incident follows a global outage in March, which lasted over two hours and impacted hundreds of thousands of users. It also comes as part of a trend of recent tech outages, including a Microsoft platform outage in November and two Reddit outages earlier that month.
Meta is ranked 24th on Forbes’ Global 2000 list with $142.7 billion in sales and a market value of $1.197 trillion.
