Israel Condemnation Escalates After Al Jazeera Assassinations

The Israeli military’s assassination of four Al Jazeera journalists has sparked widespread condemnation from states and international organizations. The attacks, which left at least 46 Palestinians dead, also come amid a backdrop of mass starvation in Gaza, with over 200 people having already starved to death.

The United Nations has called for an independent investigation into the killings, while Norway’s sovereign wealth fund has announced that it will cut ties with asset managers handling Israeli investments. Australia and New Zealand have also expressed support for Palestinian statehood, with Australia securing “detailed and significant commitments” from the Palestinian Authority.

Journalists Wadie Said, a professor of law at the University of Colorado, has condemned Israel’s targeting of journalists, stating that it is “no longer being hidden or kept under wraps”. The US, however, has been accused of failing to protect Israeli officials and the state of Israel from accountability.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed “deep concern” over Israel’s plan to seize Gaza City, calling for an immediate end to hostilities. In a separate incident, two rescue workers were wounded while trying to help injured people in Gaza.

The Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, has reported attacks on Israeli troops in Gaza, and has called for an end to Israel’s war. The UN World Food Programme has warned that hunger and malnutrition levels in Gaza are at record highs, with over 500,000 people on the brink of famine.

In addition to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, protests have erupted across Europe, with activists condemning Israel’s assassination of journalists and calling for an end to the genocide.
