James Cook Returns to Practice After 9-Day Hold-In

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has returned to practice after a week-long hold-in, which saw him attend training camp but not participate due to unfinished contract negotiations. Coach Sean McDermott said the team had good conversations with Cook and that things have changed.

Cook participated fully in Tuesday’s padded practice, going through positional drills and 7-on-7 drills against the defense. He declined to speak with reporters after practice and his representation did not immediately respond to comments on his return.

The hold-in began after a conversation between McDermott and Cook on Saturday, ahead of the Bills’ preseason game against the Giants. McDermott wanted Cook to play, but he instead agreed to go through warmups in full equipment. Cook’s teammates, including Josh Allen, have remained supportive during this time.

Cook will become a free agent at the end of the season and has been open about his desires for a new contract. Negotiations appeared to be on track when he participated in the Bills’ first eight practices, but changed after his hold-in began. General manager Brandon Beane discussed the matter, stating that finding the “sweet spot” is key.

Cook’s return to practice marks an improvement from his previous behavior, and McDermott said it’s too early to declare the hold-in over. Cook will have another opportunity to practice on Wednesday before the Bills’ joint practices with the Bears on Friday.
