A wave of car break-ins swept through Minneapolis overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, with at least 125 reports of broken vehicle windows in two neighborhoods. The affected areas are in the Second and Fifth Precincts.
The break-ins occurred in groupings, meaning multiple vehicles on the same block were damaged during the same date and time. In northeast Minneapolis, more than 20 cars had broken windows along NE 2nd Street. Residents, including graduate student Shannon Wagner, who had her car and others broken into on her block, are feeling frustrated.
“I’m not concerned for my safety, but I wish there was a solution,” said Wagner. The police department is investigating leads and collaborating with neighboring cities to determine if the break-ins are connected.
Last month, around 200 cars were targeted by vandals in the city, primarily in northeast Minneapolis, Uptown, and Loring Park. While some residents reported stolen items, others claimed the suspects didn’t take anything. With no arrests made yet, residents are left to patch up broken windows with makeshift covers.
