An airstrike in Gaza City killed prominent Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif and five colleagues, who were all reporting for Al Jazeera. The attack was condemned by groups representing journalists, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which called Israel’s allegations against al-Sharif “unsubstantiated.”
Al-Sharif, a father of two young children, had faced displacement orders and airstrikes in Gaza but continued to report from the region. His reporting gained him a large following on social media, and he was known for his bravery and dedication to conveying the truth. The CPJ has recorded nearly 190 lethal attacks on journalists in Gaza since the start of the war.
Israel’s military confirmed the airstrike and released graphic evidence claiming al-Sharif was a Hamas cell commander, but this allegation was first made last year. Al-Sharif’s killing comes as Israel plans to launch a sweeping invasion of Gaza City, sparking concerns that it is trying to silence journalists who expose its actions.
