Tesla is recruiting test drivers in Queens, New York, to operate cars with “automated driving systems,” despite not having applied for necessary permits. The company has hired vehicle operators to conduct dynamic audio and camera data collection for testing and training purposes. However, the city’s Department of Transportation requires any company testing AVs in NYC to keep a trained safety driver behind the wheel at all times.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is pushing for a future built around AI and robotics, but the company still earns most of its revenue from EV sales. Tesla’s EV sales have declined this year, partly due to Musk’s focus on the Cybertruck over more affordable EVs. The company faces political backlash and product liability lawsuits related to its Autopilot system.
Tesla has received permits to operate a ride-hailing service in Texas and is testing autonomous vehicles in other cities, including Dallas and Palo Alto. However, Tesla not authorized to carry passengers on public roads in California.
