A mysterious virus has hit China, sparking concerns over its spread. The chikungunya virus, primarily spread via mosquito bites, has infected 10,000 people in the country, making it the largest outbreak on record. Symptoms include fever, joint pain, headache, and muscle aches.
Younger individuals, older adults, and those with pre-existing medical conditions are most vulnerable to the virus. There is currently no cure or treatment available.
China’s southern manufacturing hub of Foshan has been severely affected, but cases have now also appeared in Hong Kong and Taiwan. To combat the outbreak, authorities have distributed mosquito nets, sprayed disinfectant, and deployed drones to target insect breeding sites.
The US FDA has lifted a pause on administering a vaccine for the virus, while the UK Government’s teams work to monitor and respond to the disease. Health experts warn that climate change and urbanization may expand the range of Aedes mosquitoes, potentially bringing chikungunya to new areas in Europe.
