Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed a personal battle with stage 4 melanoma in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. Jones fought cancer for a decade, undergoing multiple surgeries and experimental treatment, including PD-1 immunotherapy. He credits the treatment and his doctors with saving his life.
Jones was diagnosed with skin cancer cells that had metastasized to other parts of the body, which gave him a 35% five-year survival rate. However, new treatments have increased this rate to 50%, according to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
In an episode of Netflix’s America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, Jones briefly mentioned his cancer treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center but did not specify what kind or how it was treating him. He has since spoken publicly about his experience, using his platform to raise awareness and give hope to others who have faced similar battles.
The Cowboys organization has been supportive of Jones during his fight, with senior vice president Tad Carper having a successful surgery in October after being diagnosed with stage 2 cancer. Coach Brian Schottenheimer also shared his own thyroid cancer experience and credited Jones’ openness for giving him hope.
Jones’ story serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing health and seeking medical attention early. His courage and resilience in the face of adversity have inspired those around him, including his teammates and fellow team members.
