Air Canada Flight Attendants to Strike Amid Dispute Over Wages

Air Canada is preparing to lock out its flight attendants who voted to go on strike this weekend, leading to travel disruptions that could last until a deal is reached. The airline plans to suspend operations on Saturday and may remain shut down until an agreement is secured.

According to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), nearly all members voted in favor of striking, citing concerns over wages and unpaid work. The union had proposed data-driven solutions for compensation increases, but Air Canada’s offer of a 38% increase over four years was deemed insufficient.

The airline claims it has attempted negotiations for eight months, including an offer to enter arbitration, while the union seeks 100% pay for all hours worked and cost-of-living enhancements. Federal Minister Patty Hajdu has met with both parties and offered support for mediation until a resolution is found.

Air Canada operates nearly 430 daily flights between Canada and the US, serving approximately 130,000 customers daily. With flights expected to be canceled starting August 14, passengers are advised to monitor flight status closely for updates on service disruptions.
