Bill Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach, has agreed to a five-year deal to lead the University of North Carolina football program. The 72-year-old Belichick will be the school’s next head coach after Mack Brown’s departure from his second stint in Chapel Hill.
The hiring was announced by UNC athletics director Bubba Cunningham, who stated that hiring Belichick represents a new approach to ensure the team can evolve and win in the future. Belichick has no college coaching experience but enjoyed great success in the NFL with quarterback Tom Brady during his 24-year tenure with the New England Patriots.
Belichick was previously linked to an NFL job, including the Atlanta Falcons, before agreeing to the terms of his deal with UNC. The agreement came after days of negotiations between Belichick and university officials, bringing a surprising conclusion to the coaching search process just one week earlier.
