Turkey has condemned the actions of Israel and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), saying they are destabilizing Syria’s recovery efforts after the devastating civil war. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan hosted his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al-Shaibani, in Ankara, where they signed a military cooperation agreement.
Fidan accused Israel of fueling difficulties in Syria and warned that Israeli security cannot be achieved through undermining neighboring countries’ stability. He emphasized that Israel should focus on making its neighbors prosperous and secure.
The SDF’s actions were also criticized by Fidan, who said the group was trying to turn instability into an opportunity for itself. Ankara views the SDF with hostility due to its affiliation with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been involved in a long conflict with Turkey.
Meanwhile, clashes between Syrian government forces and the SDF continued in Aleppo province, casting doubt on an integration deal signed by the two sides. The Defence Ministry warned the SDF to stop targeting government forces, threatening new consequences if they fail to comply.
Turkey’s defense minister also signed a military cooperation agreement with Syria, as the countries aim to strengthen their relations and cooperate on security issues.
