US adults report drinking less, with a record-low 54% of respondents saying they consume alcohol. The decline in moderate drinking coincides with growing concerns that it’s bad for one’s health, now the majority view for the first time.
Since 1939, Gallup has tracked Americans’ drinking behavior and views on its health implications. This year’s results show a consecutive three-year decline in reported drinking, with women (51%) down more than men (57%). Young adults have also seen their drinking rate fall from 59% to 50%.
A majority of Americans now believe moderate drinking is unhealthy (53%), up from 39% in 2023. Women and Democrats are more likely than men and Republicans to hold this view.
Those who drink report consuming less alcohol, with a record-low 24% having a drink in the past 24 hours. The average number of drinks consumed over seven days has also decreased.
Gallup’s findings suggest that shifts in drinking habits may be linked to growing awareness about the health risks associated with moderate drinking. This trend could influence companies selling alcohol and public health initiatives.
