A mysterious virus is spreading among cottontail rabbits, causing them to grow black, tentacle-like growths out of their heads. The disease, called cottontail papilloma virus or Shope papilloma virus, is spread by parasites like ticks and fleas. Experts warn against approaching or handling the infected animals due to the risk of infection spreading between rabbits.
The affected rabbits, nicknamed “Frankenbunnies,” have been spotted in Colorado and are more commonly found in the Midwest. While the disease can be fatal if left untreated, veterinarians can surgically remove the growths before they become malignant. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for cottontail papilloma virus.
Wildlife experts advise keeping wild rabbits away from pets due to the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma, a serious skin cancer. The infected animals often die from starvation if their ability to eat is impaired by the disease. Residents are warned to steer clear of the mutated critters and seek medical attention if they encounter an infected rabbit.
