The Hubble Space Telescope has captured the best picture yet of a high-speed comet visiting our solar system from another star. The comet, known as 3I-Atlas, is only the third known interstellar object to pass by and poses no threat to Earth. Discovered last month in Chile, its estimated size ranges from 1,000 feet to 3.5 miles across.
The comet is hurtling towards Mars at 130,000 mph, but will veer closer to the planet than Earth. At its closest point, it was 277 million miles away when photographed by Hubble a couple of weeks ago. The telescope revealed a teardrop-shaped plume of dust around the nucleus and traces of a dusty tail.
This is the third known interstellar object to visit our solar system, with the previous two passing close to Earth. The discovery of 3I-Atlas marks an exciting moment in space exploration, providing scientists with new insights into these rare celestial visitors.
