Typhoon Podul Passes Through Taiwan, Heads for China

Typhoon Podul made landfall on southern Taiwan’s east coast on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and prompting authorities to close schools and government offices in the affected areas. Despite its expected impact on agriculture, no major damage was reported.

The storm crossed the island at approximately 36 kilometers per hour, with its center located just off the west coast by 5:00 p.m. local time. As it moved into China, provinces such as Fujian and Guangdong recalled fishing boats to port and evacuated around 15,000 people living near the coast.

In Taiwan, one person was reported missing on the east coast, while flights to the affected areas were delayed or canceled due to the storm. The counties of Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi, Yunlin, Pingtung, and Hualien were hit hardest by the storm, along with the island group of Penghu in the Taiwan Strait.

The typhoon’s path was expected to bring flooding, landslides, and damage to fruit crops. The areas affected are well south of the capital, Taipei, and were previously badly hit by heavy rains in recent weeks that caused severe damage to crops but minimal casualties.
