AI Aids Colonoscopy Detection with Reduced Adenoma Rates

A new AI colonoscopy tool has been rolled out at four health centers, improving adenoma detection rates and potentially reducing the risk of colon cancer. The algorithm detects precancerous polyps by drawing a square around them during procedures.

Researchers compared the AI-assisted detection rates to those without the aid. Initially, doctors found 28% of adenomas in colonoscopies before using the tool. After three months, this rate dropped significantly to 22%. This finding suggests that relying solely on clinical AI may lead to reduced detection capabilities, a phenomenon dubbed “deskilling” effect.
