Google is introducing a new feature that lets users choose the news outlets they want to see most in their search results. The “preferred sources” section will be added to the top stories hub, which currently displays relevant articles from around the web.
To access this feature, users can search for a current event and click on the icon next to the “top stories” label. From there, they can select their preferred news outlets, such as The Verge or Vox Media. Once customized, the selected outlets will appear in both the top stories list and a new “from your sources” section.
This feature is being rolled out to users in the US and India, with no limit on the number of sources that can be added. Existing testers will also have their preferred sources automatically applied.
It’s worth noting that this feature focuses on personalization rather than AI-powered search results. Google has recently addressed concerns about its AI features negatively impacting web traffic, stating that click volume remains relatively stable and users are increasingly navigating to websites with forums, podcasts, videos, and authentic voices.
