Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer shared a personal struggle with thyroid cancer when he was 28 years old. In an interview via video from the team, Schottenheimer revealed the diagnosis and treatment process, saying it gave people “hope.” He showed a scar where doctors removed 17 lymph nodes to rid him of the disease.
Schottenheimer’s experience was triggered after he received a message with bad news during training camp more than two decades ago. His father, Marty, immediately called former Washington owner Dan Snyder, who had also overcome thyroid cancer two years prior. Schottenheimer praised Snyder for his support, saying it helped him get the best help possible.
The coach acknowledged that hearing his diagnosis was “traumatic” but emphasized that it taught him to appreciate what truly matters in life. He expressed gratitude for his position in the NFL and the role Dan Snyder played in his recovery. Schottenheimer is now cancer-free and hopes sharing his story will inspire others.
