Israeli forces are set to occupy Gaza City as part of an expanded military operation. IDF Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir has approved the main framework for the IDF’s operational plan in the Gaza Strip.
The plan aims to “demilitarize” the strip, remove Hamas from power, and ensure Israel’s security control. The operation will target areas where Hamas is believed to be holding living hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has set five principles for the end of the war: disarmament, freeing all hostages, demilitarization, Israel’s security control, and a civilian administration that doesn’t support terrorism.
The expansion of the war has been criticized by families of hostage-takers, who fear it will be a death sentence for their loved ones. Hospitals across Gaza reported 123 deaths and 437 injuries over the previous 24 hours, with eight more deaths due to hunger recorded. The death toll this year due to famine has risen to 235, including 106 children.
