Musk Threatens Apple Over AI Rankings in App Store

Elon Musk has threatened Apple with legal action over alleged antitrust violations related to the rankings of his artificial intelligence startup’s app, Grok AI chatbot, on the App Store. In a post on his social media platform X, Musk claimed that Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the top free apps section.

Musk accused Apple of favoring OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot over other competitors, including Grok AI, which he said should be ranked higher. He questioned why Apple refused to feature Grok AI in their “Must Have” section, despite it being ranked #5 among all apps.

An Apple spokesperson responded that the App Store is designed to be fair and free of bias, featuring thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations, and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria. The company’s goal is to provide safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers.

This dispute is not the first time Apple has faced antitrust challenges. In a landmark case, the Department of Justice sued the company over charges of running an iPhone ecosystem monopoly. Musk’s feud with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also continues, as they previously engaged in a public spat over the direction of artificial intelligence development.
