Tencent Uncertain on US AI Chip Imports Amid Beijing-Washington Talks

Chinese tech giant Tencent says it lacks clarity on US AI chip imports as negotiations between Beijing and Washington continue. Despite the uncertainty, the company maintains sufficient inventory for its AI operations.

Tencent President Martin Lau stated that the situation is unclear due to ongoing discussions between the two governments. The talks center around advanced semiconductor trade, with Nvidia’s H20 chips at the forefront of recent regulatory scrutiny over security concerns.

Lau assured that Tencent’s AI ambitions will not be constrained by the uncertainty, citing adequate chip supplies for AI model training and multiple deployment options for AI services. The company reported strong second-quarter results, with revenue rising 15% to 184.5 billion yuan ($25.7 billion).

Gaming remained a key growth driver, while marketing services revenue increased 20% year-on-year. Net profit reached 55.6 billion yuan, surpassing analyst expectations.

Tencent has accelerated AI investments over the past two years but has taken a more measured approach to spending on its initiatives. The company has developed its own large language model, Hunyuan, and integrated third-party models like DeepSeek’s technology across its platforms.
