Turkey has agreed to provide military aid to Syria, including weapons systems and logistical tools, under a new cooperation accord. The deal, signed on Wednesday, marks an important step towards a comprehensive partnership between the two countries.
As a NATO member, Turkey has been one of Syria’s main allies since last year’s ousting of President Bashar al-Assad. Ankara has vowed to help train and restructure Syria’s armed forces, rebuild the country, and support efforts to protect Syrian territorial integrity.
Under the accord, Turkey will coordinate military training and cooperation with Syria, provide consultancy and information sharing, and assist in procuring military equipment. The agreement also includes logistical support and related services.
Turkey has been growing impatient with the lack of implementation of a March deal between Damascus and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Ankara considers the SDF a terrorist organization and has warned of military action against it if its demands are not met.
The SDF had failed to meet any conditions of the March deal, according to the Turkish defense ministry. Turkey’s expectations are for full compliance with the agreement and urgent implementation in the field.
