A biopic on the late Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor is officially in production, two years after her death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. The film will focus on O’Connor’s early life and career, including her breakout hit “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990.
Directed by Josephine Decker and written by Stacey Gregg, the biopic has been in development since Kathryn Ferguson’s 2022 documentary Nothing Compares. Irish companies ie: entertainment and Nine Daughters are partnering with See-Saw Films to bring O’Connor’s story to the screen.
O’Connor, who passed away at 56, was a trailblazer in music, influencing artists such as Tori Amos, Tegan and Sara, and Alanis Morissette. Following her death, Phoebe Bridgers paid tribute to her in Rolling Stone, calling O’Connor “a musician and stand for something” who empowered her to express herself.
The biopic is set to explore O’Connor’s life and legacy, including her memoir Rememberings and a proposed biopic based on the book. With the support of her management company, which revealed she was reviewing tour dates and considering the project before her passing, the film aims to do justice to O’Connor’s remarkable story.
