Tesla CEO and SpaceX owner Elon Musk said his social media platform X is working to fix its AI chatbot, Grok, after it sided with rival tech chief Sam Altman in a dispute over Apple’s App Store policies.
Musk alleged that Apple does not allow any AI company besides OpenAI to reach No. 1 in the App Store. However, another tech news outlet reported that Musk pressured X engineers to make changes that would benefit his posts following the Super Bowl in 2023.
Grok sided with Altman, saying Musk’s posts are boosted by algorithm changes directed by him. Musk called these claims “false defamatory statements” and said Grok was a problem for the platform.
The dispute also revealed that AI companies outside of OpenAI have reached the top spot on the App Store, contradicting Musk’s claim. These include Chinese startup DeepSeek and Indian search engine firm Perplexity.
Musk and Altman have a history of feuding over their businesses and policies. The feud escalated after Musk bid $94.7 billion for OpenAI in February but was rejected by CEO Sam Altman.
