National Grid Rate Hike Approved, Bills to Increase Next Month

National Grid has been approved to raise gas and electric rates over the next three years, with typical household bills increasing by $22 a month starting in September. The rate hike is intended to cover inflation-driven cost increases and provide discounts for low-income customers.

According to Jared Paventi, National Grid spokesperson, the increase will help pay for upgrades to aging infrastructure, making it more resilient against extreme weather events and reducing outages. However, Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed concern that the rate hike may not go far enough to protect vulnerable customers, particularly seniors and young families.

The state Public Service Commission approved a revised rate plan, which is considered a significant reduction from National Grid’s original proposal. Commission Chair Rory Christian stated that the three-year rate plan meets legal requirements and benefits customers while keeping affordability in mind.

Despite the approval, State Assemblyman Scott Gray remains critical of the rate hike, citing its potential impact on fixed-income households. National Grid officials argue that the increase is necessary to balance reliability with affordability. Concerned customers can reach out to National Grid at 1-800-642-4272 for more information.
