Flesh-Eating Bacteria Infection on Cape Cod Raises Alarm

A recent infection contracted by a Cape Cod swimmer has raised concerns about the presence of Vibrio vulnificus bacteria on the Massachusetts coast. According to David Hamer, an infectious disease expert at Boston University, this was not unexpected. “It’s been only a matter of time” for such incidents to occur in warm water areas like the Gulf Coast. The same bacteria that cause cholera and acute gastroenteritis also thrive in warm environments.
