Protests in Serbia Target Ruling Party Offices

Protesters in Serbia’s north have targeted the offices of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) after violent unrest left dozens injured. In Novi Sad, anti-government protesters smashed the windows of SNS offices, threw out furniture and party paraphernalia, and splashed paint across the entrance.

The protests, sparked by the deaths of 16 people in a railway station collapse last November, have rattled the popularity of President Aleksandar Vucic and the SNS. Demonstrators chanted “He’s gone” in reference to Vucic’s rule, and police used tear gas to disperse crowds.

In Belgrade, hundreds of protesters and SNS supporters clashed on a main boulevard, throwing flares and firecrackers at each other. Police intervened, charging the anti-government protesters and using tear gas to force them to leave.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic accused protesters of attacking police in several towns, with at least five officers injured. Vucic vowed to make more arrests, saying he believes protesters did not want peace.

Protesters have blamed corruption for the Novi Sad railway station disaster and are demanding early elections to oust Vucic and his party. The opposition has accused Vucic of ties to organized crime and suppressing media freedoms, allegations he denies.
